2022 - 2023 7TH GRADE SUMMER READING

Dear Seventh Grade Students,

Summer is a wonderful time of year that allows kids to play baseball, swim, hang out with friends, and go on family vacations.  I want you to have time to do all of this and more, but I also want you to keep reading.  The best way to become a better reader is to read more.

This summer I’ve assigned the book Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick as your summer reading book.  Freak the Mighty is the moving story of an unlikely but powerful friendship between two boys who couldn’t be more opposite. This book is sure to bring your family laughs and tears as Max and Kevin accomplish the seemingly impossible on their adventures.  The book must be completed by the first day of school.  This will give us one common reading experience as we begin school in August.

As you read, please complete a summary of each chapter and bring it to school on the first day of class.  Assignments centered around the book will be given the first few weeks of school, so it will be obvious if you did not read the book.  You will be expected to discuss, summarize, and analyze the book, and both formative and summative grades will eventually be earned.  During the first week of school, you will also participate in literary discussions based on the summer reading book.

If you need a copy of the book, please see me before May 26th.  If you have questions please feel free to email me at rmitchell@fairbankspanthers.org

Happy Reading,

Mrs. Mitchell
